J. Harold Nissen joined the firm in 2001 after the firm McAulay, Nissen, Goldberg and Kiel was merged into Reed Smith.  As an intellectual property attorney Mr. Nissen, has handled litigation, acquisitions of patents, trademarks and copyrights, as well as opinions to protect new developments.  He has experience in electronics, computers, optical, complex mechanical machines and medical instrument technologies and stem cell areas.

Mr. Nissen was previously a government attorney assigned to the group handling the Protection of Inventions developed by the MIT Radiation Laboratory for Signal Corp, for the Department of the Army, where he was primarily concerned with waveguides, radar equipment, communications and optical and circuitry inventions.  He is currently engaged in a complete International Intellectual Property Practice.

Some of the articles written by Mr. Nissen include “Proposal for Industrial Property Regime for the Law of the Sea”; “Industrial Property Rights Overseas”; and “Obtaining, Maintaining and Protecting Foreign Property Rights.”

Mr. Nissen earned his Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering in 1947 from the City College of the City of New York, and his J.D. from New York University Law School in 1951.  He was admitted to the New York Bar, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit; and he is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
